BHS 2011 Graduation

Burbank High seniors brace for the future
Of nearly 600 graduates, a quarter have GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

By Megan O'Neil, Burbank Leader
May 28, 2011

As the first measures of “Pomp and Circumstance” echoed throughout the Starlight Bowl on Friday, a large cheer erupted from the nearly 600 Burbank High School graduates waiting their turn to take to the stage. “It is about time,” said Jeremy Labertew. “It has been a long time coming, 13 years of school and it is finally here. It is like the finale of my life in Burbank.”

The 2011 graduates, sporting cap and gowns in Bulldog blue, and some with tassels and medals indicating special achievements, are among the most accomplished in recent memory, said Principal Bruce Osgood.

The class includes 150 students with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher, and 65 students with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher, the latter statistic a school record, Osgood said.

Class valedictorian Young Hong – who will attend Cal Tech in the fall – told his classmates that they could no longer shirk responsibilities nor hide behind the guise of youth. As adults, they will be responsible for coming up with practical solutions to real problems.“Graduation is not merely a formal ceremony, it is symbolic of our maturity and entrance into adulthood,” Hong said. “The baton has been passed into our hands and it is our responsibility to take part.”

Family members and friends, many bearing bouquets of flowers and balloons, snapped photos as their loved ones mounted the stage.“It is a proud moment,” said Robin Vaughn as her daughter, Magenta Vaughn, prepared to accept her diploma.

The graduates, some still bleary eyed from a trip to Disneyland the night before, said they were sorry to say goodbye, but they’re ready for the future.“You pretty much know a good majority of these people; after tonight, you will not see them again, maybe on Facebook, but you are not going to be as connected as you were in high school,” said Samantha Johnson. “But it is an exciting new chapter of our lives to get started on.”

The Burbank High graduation ceremony was the last for Osgood, who announced in February that he would leave at the end of the school year to be principal at Village Christian School in Sun Valley. READ FULL STORY

Academic Decathlon team advances to state competition

By Megan O'Neil, Burbank Leader
February 16, 2011

The Burbank High School Academic Decathlon team has advanced to the state championship after finishing fifth at the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon earlier this month.

Led by long-time Burbank High English teacher Val Beidelman, students Benjamin Reyes, Hector Santa Cruz, Mariam Kyarunts, Rafael Santa Cruz, Audrey Min, Amanda Porreca, Marc Hoffman and Bruno Maynez faced off against competitors from 47 other Southern California high schools during two days of competition on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

Burbank High finished with a team score of 40,600 out of 60,000, good enough for fifth place. West High School in Torrance won the competition for the third consecutive year with a score of 44,476 points. The top eight teams advance to the state competition, which kicks off on March 12 in Sacramento.

Reyes, a senior and Burbank High Academic Decathlon president, earned an award for individually scoring more than 8,000 points. The team also won several sectional awards, including first place in the oral super quiz and third place in the super quiz

Bruce Osgood, BHS Principal,Takes New Job at Village Christian

Burbank High principal takes job at Village Christian

Bruce Osgood will step down at the end of the school year; search is on for his replacement.

By Megan O'Neil, megan.oneil@latimes.com
February 18, 2011, Burbank Leader

Burbank High School Principal Bruce Osgood will step down at the end of the academic year to assume a similar role at Village Christian Schools in Sun Valley, officials said Thursday. Osgood, 56, will serve as principal for the middle and high schools at Village Christian, a K-12 private school with an enrollment of about 1,000 students, said Head of Schools Tom Konjoyan. He replaces Lisa Levoe, who served as interim principal for one year. Levoe will now assume the title of assistant principal and continue to be in charge of college counseling.

Village Christian has been a standard bearer in private education for 60 years, Osgood said, and offers a unique experience for an affordable price. "I have been in public education for 25 years and have always loved it," Osgood said. "That hasn’t diminished at all, but I just feel at this time the call was to move to a Christian school where I could pursue my two great passions, ministry and education."

Since Osgood took the helm at Burbank High in 2003, the school raised its Academic Performance Index score by more than 100 points, and he supervised a major refurbishment project. He has been a champion for the school’s athletic teams, and two years ago oversaw the Burbank High centennial celebration.

In 2010, he was honored by the Assn. of California School Administrators as the 2009-10 High School Principal of the Year. READ FULL STORY

Memorial Field Still Standing?

Stadium still standing

Memorial Field project pushed back to winter, causing problems for area football teams.
By Jeff Tully
June 2, 2010

BURBANK — Burroughs High football Coach Keith Knoop realized his team would have to make do without a home field for the 2010 season. The coach was told the renovation project to construct a new stadium, running track and football field on the school's Memorial Field site would begin the first week of June. With his team being displaced for a project that would last past the 2010 campaign, Knoop and the Burroughs administrators had to schedule all the Indians' 10 home games on the road.

Burbank Coach Hector Valencia and the Bulldogs were in the same boat, as the team also uses Memorial Field as their home venue. Having resigned themselves — and their teams — to their fate for the upcoming season, the coaches were floored when they were told last month that the construction project would be delayed.

According to the Burbank Unified School District, construction of the project isn't expected to begin until late November or early December. "With the delay, that means that we are going to have to play most of our games on the road for two seasons now instead of just one," Knoop said. "If we had our way, we would have liked the construction to begin [this month], so it could get finished earlier."Knoop said he was able to get three Pacific League games — against Glendale, Arcadia and Burbank — moved back to Memorial Field. However, the other seven contests will be on the road."With next year included, that means that essentially we'll have 17 games on the road," Knoop said. "And that doesn't even include playoff games."

Valencia was equally frustrated with the delay. His team had to deal with displacement a year ago when construction was underway on Burbank's new field and running track.Along with the rivalry game with the Indians, Valencia said the Bulldogs have convinced two league opponents to play at Memorial Field next season."It's disappointing, because we expected the construction to start right after the school year was over," Valencia said. "Now they're telling us that there's going to be another delay? That's just not right."Valencia said the delay is going to cost the program, and the district, more money."Because we scheduled all those games on the road next year, that's going to cost us more money," he said. "It's expensive to bus kids to games. It costs $270 an hour for a bus, and we have to pay that now for road games that we could have played at home."

Believing that their field would be inoperative for the upcoming season, Burbank and Burroughs signed contracts with nonleague schools to play three games on the road. The Indians will play games away against former Foothill League rivals Saugus, Canyon and Hart. Knoop said he tried to get the schools to switch and play at Memorial Field, but to no avail."You think that being old league teams they would do that for us," he said. "But they said they already signed contracts and they have things planned for those home games."

If the construction does get underway later this year, that would force Burroughs and Burbank to be displaced for two seasons — at the least. The Indians have the added headache of finding a place to practice during the construction. But for many — like Valencia — who have been waiting for a new venue to finally be constructed, they are bracing for another delay. They aren't convinced in the least that work will be started in November or December."Who knows," Valencia said. "We just want it to get done and we're hoping that they are going to do a good job when they do finally build it." Read Full Story

Burbank High School 2010 Graduation

Burbank High School: 'This is it' for 670 students
By Max Zimbert, Burbank Leader
May 29, 2010

Ani Vertanous and Sabina Agazarian said they've been friends since middle school, but walking up the hill to the Starlight Bowl for their Burbank High School commencement Friday, they started yelling. They weren't going to be sitting next to one another for the ceremony, but they said that didn't take away from their sense of accomplishment, relief and joy."It feels amazing," Vertanous said. "It's the end, and I accomplished everything."The two will be going to Pasadena City College next year, representing two stories among the almost 670 graduating seniors who became alumni Friday night.

"Senior year was the best year," said Tyler Wells, who'll be enrolling at Glendale Community College. His family flew in from the Bay Area. For his mother, Fran Wells, reflecting on her son's accomplishments and growth in the last four years almost made her cry, she said."I'm so proud and excited for him," she said. "And he's going to be around, and we're happy to have him."

While Tyler Wells will be in the neighborhood next year, the commencement theme "This Is It" rang true for many others who'll be moving far from home, like Aaron Frank."In ninth grade we had a speaker who said, 'No regrets,'" said the incoming Syracuse University freshman. "I pushed myself and made sure I never regretted any decisions I make.

"Same with Sophie Irwin, who'll be going to college in Alabama. Her father, Steve, said he's gotten accustomed to not seeing Sophie much."This year, we barely saw her," he said. "She'll be back on major holidays. We have a small house, the extra elbow room might be nice."

Baseball teammates Sam Levitt and Lonnie Kauppila said that with several graduating seniors, the lineup is likely to enter a rebuilding phase. Kauppila will be playing baseball at Stanford University next year, while Levitt enrolls at UCLA."I'll see him when he's in town [playing UCLA]," Levitt said. "It hasn't hit me yet. I'm looking forward to the future, but I'm trying to remember everything that happened during high school."

Clad in blue caps and gowns, students milled around the grass behind the bowl's seats, taking pictures and celebrating their final moments in Burbank Unified. "They are so close with one another and friendly, and just really nice kids," said Carolyn Grogan, an English teacher.

For Daniel Flores, one of the student speakers, it was a moment he wasn't sure he'd see. Freshman year was his low point, he said. The next year, he transferred to Monterrey High School, made up 127 credits and returned to Burbank High, giving up horseplay for career goals."The message is, no matter who you are or what you want to do, you can do it," he said.

"This is a very special moment for me right now."That's what "This Is It" was all about, said Mary Beth Medina, the school's student board member and a graduation speaker."This expression depends on every senior here," she said in her address. "It's not what you say, it's about what you do . . . We made it through. Now, welcome to your future."

Burbank High Students need our help!

Hi Everyone,

Please read this email from the "bottom up". It is from Christine Krohn, former AP of Burbank High and current Principal of Burbank Community Day School.

I am forwarding this to all of you, because you are some of the best "detectives" I know...

Christine and her students need to borrow a picture of a BHS Baseball Team from the 1950's for a school project. Christine will personally guarantee the safety of the photo. Apparently, they need an actual photo and not one from a Ceralbus.

Hopefully, one of you can help (perhaps, you have older siblings who went to BHS and played baseball in the '50's...) If you can assist in this matter, please let me know right away.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Pam Zipfel Kirkwood '64

Hi Christine,

I will forward your request to several contacts I have and see what we can come up with. It could take a bit of time...How soon is this picture needed?

I am assuming that you want an actual photo, not a picture that is in a 1950's Ceralbus, because Burbank High has all the yearbooks from every year.

I will be in touch...

Sincerely,

Pam Zipfel Kirkwood BHS '64

Hi PamMy name is Christine Krohn, the Principal at Burbank Community Day School and would like to ask the Senior Bulldogs a favor. We are looking for a team picture of a baseball team from Burbank High School in the 1950's. My students are doing a short film and need the picture for a few days. I was an assistant principal at Burbank High School for 21 years and work with several of your Senior Bulldogs, but have no way of getting a hold of any of them. I would guarantee the safety of the picture. If you can help, please contact me at (818) 558-4693.Thank you for your consideration in this matter.Sincerely Yours,Christine KrohnPrincipal Burbank Community Day School.

BHS Choir Comes To The Rescue!

There has always been a big cross-town rival with Burroughs High but on February 27 that all disappeared when the Burbank High School Choir came to the rescue of the John Burroughs High School Choir.

When the truck carrying the JBHS choir equipment back from a competition on Feb 27, ran off the road; Burbank High's choir came to the rescue.

Late on that Saturday the Burroughs truck carrying all their choir equipment slid off the rain slick transition road from the 605 to the 5 freeway, landing on its side down a very muddy embankment. The driver was not hurt which was the good news. The bad news was that a cart that held the choir's risers had broken loose and tore through the roof of the rental truck. A tow truck was called and when the tow truck pulled the truck back onto the roadway, all of the choir's equipment spilled out into the mud and rain.

Soon the word of the accident spread quickly by cell phone when Gary Stevens a choir parent whose brother , Sean Stevens, was driving the Burbank High Choir truck back home from the same competition called him. Sean turned around and came back to the scene of the accident to see if he could help. Realizing they would need a truck for all the equipment, he drove back to Burbank High, but no one to let him in so he drove to Burroughs and unloaded the BHS equipment on the Burroughs stage and then drove back to the accident scene. By this time a group of about 10 choir dads , along with the choir director, were carrying the muddy equipment up the enbankment. The exhausted group got back to Burroughs at 6 in the morning, where they parked the truck, and went home to get some sleep.

That afternoon a large group unloaded the truck and cleaned off the equipment and then loaded up the Burbank High choir equipment and put it back into the Burbank High rental truck and drove it back to Burbank High and unloaded. A couple pieces of the Burrough equipment needed some welding which one of the dads did and so their was only two pieces of equipmet that would need to be replace at several hundred dollars, but overall they were lucky as it could of been worse.

By the following day, a new rental truck was parked next to the Burroughs Auditorium, being loaded for the choir's next competition.

BURBANK vs BURROUGHS Tonight

Well gang tonight Friday the 13th is the big game with the Burbank High School Bulldogs taking on our cross town rival John Burroughs High School Indians with the Pacific League Title on the line. Burroughs is going into tonight's game undefeated in league and Burbank has one loss in league losing last week to Pasadena in the last 10 seconds of the game. Burbank has to beat Burroughs tonight and they would then be in a tie with Burroughs for the Pacific League Title, with each teams with one loss in league play. If Burrough's wins tonight game they will clinch the Pacific League Title and remain undefeated. So a lot is at stake tonight! The weird thing is that Burrough's Coach Knoop is a graduate of Burbank High. The JV game is tonight at Memorial Field at 4:00 pm and the Varsity game starts at 7:30pm. You should get there early as parking is a problem and they expect the game to sell out. This is wishing our Burbank High School Bulldog Football Teams a big GOOD LUCK! GO BULLDOGS!

• WHERE: Arcadia High.
• RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 6-1, 4-0 in the Pacific League; the Apaches are 1-5-1, 1-3.

• LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Hoover, 48-13; Arcadia lost to Burroughs, 35-25.

Association Raises Funds at Bucco Di Burbank

ASSOCIATION RAISES FUNDS AT BUCCO DI BURBANK

The students of the Burbank High School’s show choirs sang for their guests’ supper on Sept. 24 in the school’s outdoor eating area. There were 400 people at the sold-out event. With an Italian theme, the students were singing waiters, personally serving and singing to their tables. Choirs also rotated on the stage with the other waiters lined up along the rows between the tables, jumping up for their chorus parts. Some patrons even ended up dancing near their tables, partnered with their waiter.

Assistant Choir Director Donna Dandino conceived the idea of “Bucco di Burbank,” designed the show, rehearsed the choirs with Director Brett Carroll and brought it all together on the night, including her family recipe pasta sauce. The money raised for choirs goes toward sheet music, costumes, professional choreographers, props, light and sound reinforcements at the shows, professional music composers, competition fees and student scholarships.

The next fundraiser is the “Night of Magic,” on Nov. 6, which will be a sit down dinner at Pickwick Gardens with experienced servers and entertainment by the show choirs and a professional guest. In addition, there will be about 200 opportunity baskets up for silent auction. Tickets can be purchased from show choir students or through Tobi Lippman at (818) 843-7674 or tobilippman@yahoo.com.
