Burbank High Principal Resigns to take new position.

Dear Burbank High School Families,

When I came back to BHS in July of 2019 it was a very special homecoming for me. It is with mixed emotions that I share I have resigned as principal of Burbank HS effective May 13, 2022 to take a new opportunity as a Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment K -12 with one of the original charter organizations in Los Angeles. I feel that this is the right move at the right time for both me and my family.

I will miss our amazing students. It has been an honor to be a small part of such a special time in their lives and to have been trusted with guiding them during a once in a lifetime pandemic. Thank you for trusting us with your Bulldog! Given that I am a byproduct of BUSD,  a long-time resident of the City of Burbank and that this is the district where my children attend school I will remain an advocate for the students of this district and I am committed to seeing it make the changes I believe necessary in the challenges ahead.

BURBANK —  Though homecomings are usually held in the autumn, Tom Crowther, principal at Toll Middle School in Glendale Unified , will enjoy his own version of that celebration on Monday.
The Burroughs High School graduate and former district special-education teacher, baseball coach, student newspaper adviser, Burbank High assistant principal and high school sports reporter is returning to the Media City as the next principal at Burbank High. Read more here

New Group BHS Hall of Fame 2012

Next fall, a new group of 12 former Bulldogs standouts will take their place when a third induction event will be held. The event is scheduled for Sept. 8 in the school's auditorium. There will be a meet-and-greet at 5:30 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 6. "We like to make it a real special event," said Cook, who adds to the Hall of Fame every two years.

This year's list of honorees include:


CLYDE RICHARDS
A 1956 Burbank graduate, Richards cultivated a boys' tennis dynasty for the Bulldogs. Along with winning a CIF Southern Section III championship in 1993 — the last title won by the school in any sport — his teams advanced to the division quarterfinals 12 of 13 years. In addition, Burbank captured 13 straight Foothill League crowns under Richards.


JACK LOUTENSOCK
Loutensock was a teacher in the Burbank Unified School District for 32 years. He was the Indians boys' basketball coach from 1958-75 and has the most wins in program history. In 1967, a squad coached by Loutensock and paced by a nucleus of six fine players — Dave LeSueur, Benton White, Bob Saia, Ron Davidson, John Hoofman and Mike Acosta — advanced to CIF Division 3-A semifinals. That year, the Bulldogs won the Foothill League championship and amassed 24 wins.


DAVE LESUEUR
The 1967 graduate was an important member of the 1967 team that advanced to the CIF semifinals. He is the only basketball player from the school to earn high school All-America honors. He also won all-league and All-CIF Southern Section accolades.


RICK ROMERO
A standout in track and field and cross-country, Romero — who graduated in 1964 — was part of a distance dynasty at the school in the 1960s and into the 1970s. He captured a CIF Southern Section championship in the boys' 1,600 in 1964 and was the CIF runner-up in cross-country as a senior. In addition, he was the Foothill League champion in 1963.

JOHN GABALL
The 1965 graduate averaged 20 points a game during his senior season in boys' basketball. He was a two-time Foothill League Player of the Year and was named most valuable play in five separate tournaments.


BRUCE DODGE
A 1969 graduate, Dodge is the only athlete in Burbank history to be named a high school All-American in two sports (boys' swimming and water polo). His Bulldogs teams won two Foothill League championships in water polo and three in swimming. He went later earned collegiate All-American accolades at Cal State Northridge.


JEFF ROSS
An accomplished swimmer who could swim every event, Ross was a three-time high school All-American who captured the CIF Southern Section 100-yard freestyle event in 1972. As a senior, the 1973 graduate was undefeated in every dual-meet race he took part in and still holds the school record in the 100 freestyle.


KENNY WALKER
The 1975 graduate was a standout in three sports: football, basketball and track and field. In football, he was a two-time All-CIF Southern Section award winner and was named a Prep Magazine All-American as a senior. He earned a football scholarship to UCLA.


LOUISE GRONICH
Graduating in 1976, Gronich was one of Burbank's first female athletes to earn All-CIF Southern Section accolades, garnering the award twice in volleyball. She was a three-time all-league award winner in volleyball, also receiving an all-league nod in basketball. She also ran track.


LIN WHATCOTT
Another of the successful distance runners to come out of Burbank. The 1979 graduate captured a CIF Southern Section 3-A championship in the 1,600 in 1979. In addition, he placed fourth in the State Meet in the 3,200 and is a member of the Bulldogs record-holding distance medley relay team.


MARJI GILLES
Graduating in 1988, Gilles is the only athlete in school history to win a CIF Southern Section triple jump championship, taking the 3-A title in 1987. She held the national triple jump mark as a senior and was a three-time champion in the Foothill League.


TODD LEWIS
Along with Nelson, Lewis was one of the most decorated distance runners in school history. The 1989 graduate captured a title in the boys' Division 3-A 1,600 in 1989 and also added a title in cross-country. In addition, he was a state runner-up in the 800 and captured a Foothill League cross-country title.


Also receiving Distinguished Achievement Awards at the Hall of Fame event are longtime football team doctor Bruce Varon and longtime trainer Scott Moro.

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.
WHERE: Arcadia High.

RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 4-5, 3-3 in the Pacific League; the Indians are 5-4, 5-1 in league.

LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Muir, 35-24; Burroughs defeated Hoover, 42-14,

LAST YEAR: Burroughs defeated Burbank, 38-35.

OUTLOOK: With renovation still taking place at Memorial Field, this year's "Big Game" will take place at Arcadia High. Both teams have had to play all of their games on the road this season. Burroughs can control its own destiny and win a share of its third straight Pacific League title with a win in the annual rivalry contest.

However, if Arcadia (7-2, 5-1) were to be upset by Crescenta Valley (6-3, 4-2), the Indians would claim the league title for their own. A loss could put Burroughs into a tie for second.

For Burbank, it needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Bulldogs enter the rivalry game tied for fifth place with Muir (5-4, 3-3). Burbank is coming off its biggest win of the season last week, as it stayed in the postseason race with a victory against host Muir.

Confidentially, Burroughs' lone league loss this season came at the hands of the Mustangs, 28-0. However, the Indians were without their potent offensive weapon, senior running back Zander Anding, for that game.

Burbank's fortunes will likely lie with its ability to stop Anding, who has racked up big yardage and broken records along the way this season. Last week, Anding broke the single-season Burroughs rushing record of 2,001 set in 2008 by Dominique Barnes. He has 160 carries for 2,104 yards and 21 rushing touchdowns. Anding is averaging 263 yards a game, which would put him eighth on the all-time state list. He also holds the school record for yards in a game with 393 against Glendale.

The Bulldogs have a good running back of their own in Herman Castro, who is also a threat as a receiver. The Burbank defense stepped up last week, as its blitz packages frustrated Muir. The Bulldogs are hoping there isn't a repeat of the 2010 game in which they went up, 35-0, in the first half only to see Burroughs fight back and earn the victory.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Burbank has managed to win just five "Big Games" in the past 20 years.

PASADENA — Though both schools still have a game remaining this season, Friday's Pacific League contest between the Burbank High and Muir football teams carried some weight as far as staying in the hunt for a postseason spot.
And despite bringing a three-game losing streak and trailing for most of the game to the ranked opponent, the Bulldogs rallied back in the final minute to secure a thrilling 35-34 win on the road.

Burbank senior running back Herman Castro shredded the defense for three touchdowns and 139 rushing yards on 10 carries.

After allowing the only consecutive touchdowns of the night that gave Muir a 31-21 advantage early in the fourth quarter, Castro countered with a 61-yard scoring run with 7:54 to play.
Muir (5-4, 3-3 in league), ranked sixth in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division, countered with a 39-yard field goal by Jorge Castro.

But Burbank engineered a seven-play drive that covered 80 yards in under two minutes, capped by Castro's 22-yard run to push the Bulldogs (4-5, 3-3) ahead for good.

"That was a phenomenal game," Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said. "We needed this win, obviously. Every game that we play is a playoff game; we have to win. We lose a game and we're out. At least now we're still in the running. READ FULL STORY

ARCADIA — The Burbank High players and coaches knew they would face a motivated and focused Arcadia football team when the teams squared off Friday in a Pacific League game.
A week earlier, the Apaches, who many in league picked to take this year's championship, had a poor showing and, as a result, suffered a 12-point loss to Burroughs.

Arcadia couldn't afford another loss if it expected to keep its title hopes alive.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs took the brunt of Arcadia's wrath, scoring early and taking advantage of Burbank mistakes to gain an initial advantage. That was all too much for the Bulldogs to overcome, as they suffered a 38-7 loss on the road.

Burbank Loses 32-21 against S. Torrance, Non League Game

TORRANCE — It appeared the Burbank High football team had a tough struggle awaiting it Friday evening in a nonleague game at host South Torrance.

The Spartans not only came into the contest ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Northwest Division, but the program is coming off a 2010 season in which it advanced to the division championship game.

The Bulldogs braced for a challenging fight in their final nonleague game of the season and were up for the task, keeping step with South Torrance and even holding a lead late in the fourth quarter. But the Spartans mounted a late 99-yard scoring drive and tacked on an additional touchdown in the waning moments to turn back the Burbank threat, 32-21.

"They are very well-coached team and they have talent," Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said of the Spartans. "But we were able to stay right up with them, and if we don't make dumb mistakes late in that fourth quarter we could have won the game."

Burbank (1-2) looked to have grabbed control of the game in the second half, as quarterback Austin Mowatt plunged into the end zone on a two-yard keeper with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 21-18 advantage. READ FULL STORY

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

Today is September 16, 2011, National POW/MIA Recognition Day in honor and memory of all American soldiers who died as Prisners of War or are listed as Missing in Action and their remains were never found. There are many Burbank High School grads that are listed as missing from World War II and one listed as missing in action from the Vietnam War. Let us never forget them! Keep them and their families in our prayers!

DOWNEY — There were plenty of questions surrounding the Burbank High football team heading into Friday's season-opening game.

With a new quarterback, a new defensive scheme and coordinator and a variety of starting players getting their first chance to shine, the Bulldogs went into their nonleague Zero Week contest against host Warren looking for some answers.

If the Bulldogs were able to come away with anything from Friday's game it was that they are resilient, as they overcame their share of mistakes to notch a 10-3 victory.

Both teams contributed to a game that was rife with penalties, miscues, fumbles and missed opportunities.

"Being the first game of the year, obviously you are going to have your share of mistakes," said Burbank Coach Hector Valencia, whose team beat the Bears last season as well, 41-39. "Having a team with a lot of young guys, sometimes it just takes some time to get in sync." READ FULL STORY
