Burbank vs Burroughs Football Preview

WHERE: Arcadia High.

RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 4-5, 3-3 in the Pacific League; the Indians are 5-4, 5-1 in league.

LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Muir, 35-24; Burroughs defeated Hoover, 42-14,

LAST YEAR: Burroughs defeated Burbank, 38-35.

OUTLOOK: With renovation still taking place at Memorial Field, this year's "Big Game" will take place at Arcadia High. Both teams have had to play all of their games on the road this season. Burroughs can control its own destiny and win a share of its third straight Pacific League title with a win in the annual rivalry contest.

However, if Arcadia (7-2, 5-1) were to be upset by Crescenta Valley (6-3, 4-2), the Indians would claim the league title for their own. A loss could put Burroughs into a tie for second.

For Burbank, it needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Bulldogs enter the rivalry game tied for fifth place with Muir (5-4, 3-3). Burbank is coming off its biggest win of the season last week, as it stayed in the postseason race with a victory against host Muir.

Confidentially, Burroughs' lone league loss this season came at the hands of the Mustangs, 28-0. However, the Indians were without their potent offensive weapon, senior running back Zander Anding, for that game.

Burbank's fortunes will likely lie with its ability to stop Anding, who has racked up big yardage and broken records along the way this season. Last week, Anding broke the single-season Burroughs rushing record of 2,001 set in 2008 by Dominique Barnes. He has 160 carries for 2,104 yards and 21 rushing touchdowns. Anding is averaging 263 yards a game, which would put him eighth on the all-time state list. He also holds the school record for yards in a game with 393 against Glendale.

The Bulldogs have a good running back of their own in Herman Castro, who is also a threat as a receiver. The Burbank defense stepped up last week, as its blitz packages frustrated Muir. The Bulldogs are hoping there isn't a repeat of the 2010 game in which they went up, 35-0, in the first half only to see Burroughs fight back and earn the victory.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Burbank has managed to win just five "Big Games" in the past 20 years.

PASADENA — Though both schools still have a game remaining this season, Friday's Pacific League contest between the Burbank High and Muir football teams carried some weight as far as staying in the hunt for a postseason spot.
And despite bringing a three-game losing streak and trailing for most of the game to the ranked opponent, the Bulldogs rallied back in the final minute to secure a thrilling 35-34 win on the road.

Burbank senior running back Herman Castro shredded the defense for three touchdowns and 139 rushing yards on 10 carries.

After allowing the only consecutive touchdowns of the night that gave Muir a 31-21 advantage early in the fourth quarter, Castro countered with a 61-yard scoring run with 7:54 to play.
Muir (5-4, 3-3 in league), ranked sixth in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division, countered with a 39-yard field goal by Jorge Castro.

But Burbank engineered a seven-play drive that covered 80 yards in under two minutes, capped by Castro's 22-yard run to push the Bulldogs (4-5, 3-3) ahead for good.

"That was a phenomenal game," Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said. "We needed this win, obviously. Every game that we play is a playoff game; we have to win. We lose a game and we're out. At least now we're still in the running. READ FULL STORY

ARCADIA — The Burbank High players and coaches knew they would face a motivated and focused Arcadia football team when the teams squared off Friday in a Pacific League game.
A week earlier, the Apaches, who many in league picked to take this year's championship, had a poor showing and, as a result, suffered a 12-point loss to Burroughs.

Arcadia couldn't afford another loss if it expected to keep its title hopes alive.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs took the brunt of Arcadia's wrath, scoring early and taking advantage of Burbank mistakes to gain an initial advantage. That was all too much for the Bulldogs to overcome, as they suffered a 38-7 loss on the road.

Burbank Loses 32-21 against S. Torrance, Non League Game

TORRANCE — It appeared the Burbank High football team had a tough struggle awaiting it Friday evening in a nonleague game at host South Torrance.

The Spartans not only came into the contest ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Northwest Division, but the program is coming off a 2010 season in which it advanced to the division championship game.

The Bulldogs braced for a challenging fight in their final nonleague game of the season and were up for the task, keeping step with South Torrance and even holding a lead late in the fourth quarter. But the Spartans mounted a late 99-yard scoring drive and tacked on an additional touchdown in the waning moments to turn back the Burbank threat, 32-21.

"They are very well-coached team and they have talent," Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said of the Spartans. "But we were able to stay right up with them, and if we don't make dumb mistakes late in that fourth quarter we could have won the game."

Burbank (1-2) looked to have grabbed control of the game in the second half, as quarterback Austin Mowatt plunged into the end zone on a two-yard keeper with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 21-18 advantage. READ FULL STORY

DOWNEY — There were plenty of questions surrounding the Burbank High football team heading into Friday's season-opening game.

With a new quarterback, a new defensive scheme and coordinator and a variety of starting players getting their first chance to shine, the Bulldogs went into their nonleague Zero Week contest against host Warren looking for some answers.

If the Bulldogs were able to come away with anything from Friday's game it was that they are resilient, as they overcame their share of mistakes to notch a 10-3 victory.

Both teams contributed to a game that was rife with penalties, miscues, fumbles and missed opportunities.

"Being the first game of the year, obviously you are going to have your share of mistakes," said Burbank Coach Hector Valencia, whose team beat the Bears last season as well, 41-39. "Having a team with a lot of young guys, sometimes it just takes some time to get in sync." READ FULL STORY

Hani Youssef Named New Principal Of Burbank High School

Hani Youssef has been a professional educator since 1994. He received his B.A. at California State University, Northridge, in 1995, and his M.S. and administrative credential at Mount St. Mary’s College in 2000.

For six years, Hani taught English at both the high school and middle school level before serving as an administrator. He has acquired experience as an administrator in three different districts: Los Angeles Unified, Conejo Unified, and Burbank Unified School District. He has been serving as an assistant principal at Burbank High School since 2003.

Youssef has grown into a proven leader who can make positive changes happen. He has many years of different kinds of administrative experiences which show that he can succeed in any assignment with any group or team. Hani possesses strong character traits that match the ones identified by parents and staff members and are needed for the leadership at BHS. His experience and knowledge of the culture, history, and community will aide him as he creates future successes at Burbank High School.

Burbank High seniors brace for the future
Of nearly 600 graduates, a quarter have GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

As the first measures of “Pomp and Circumstance” echoed throughout the Starlight Bowl on Friday, a large cheer erupted from the nearly 600 Burbank High School graduates waiting their turn to take to the stage. “It is about time,” said Jeremy Labertew. “It has been a long time coming, 13 years of school and it is finally here. It is like the finale of my life in Burbank.”

The 2011 graduates, sporting cap and gowns in Bulldog blue, and some with tassels and medals indicating special achievements, are among the most accomplished in recent memory, said Principal Bruce Osgood.

The class includes 150 students with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher, and 65 students with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher, the latter statistic a school record, Osgood said.

Class valedictorian Young Hong – who will attend Cal Tech in the fall – told his classmates that they could no longer shirk responsibilities nor hide behind the guise of youth. As adults, they will be responsible for coming up with practical solutions to real problems.“Graduation is not merely a formal ceremony, it is symbolic of our maturity and entrance into adulthood,” Hong said. “The baton has been passed into our hands and it is our responsibility to take part.”

Family members and friends, many bearing bouquets of flowers and balloons, snapped photos as their loved ones mounted the stage.“It is a proud moment,” said Robin Vaughn as her daughter, Magenta Vaughn, prepared to accept her diploma.

The graduates, some still bleary eyed from a trip to Disneyland the night before, said they were sorry to say goodbye, but they’re ready for the future.“You pretty much know a good majority of these people; after tonight, you will not see them again, maybe on Facebook, but you are not going to be as connected as you were in high school,” said Samantha Johnson. “But it is an exciting new chapter of our lives to get started on.”

The Burbank High graduation ceremony was the last for Osgood, who announced in February that he would leave at the end of the school year to be principal at Village Christian School in Sun Valley. READ FULL STORY

Burbank High graduate shines on center stage at Equestrian National Championships for Texas A&M, clinching title.

Becca Murray got her first taste of collegiate national championship competition as a freshman last season at Texas A&M University. However, as some her teammates were busy winning a title at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships, Murray wasn't chosen as one of the Aggies' riders and didn't get the opportunity to compete.

"Even though I didn't compete last year, it was kind of nice to be able to just watch everybody and see what happens at the competition," said Murray, a 2009 Burbank High graduate. "I helped out a lot and I was able to warm up horses. It was nice to be there supporting our team and seeing what it was all about."

This season, Texas A&M's western team again made its way to the championship event — the 10th Varsity Equestrian National Championships April 14-16 at Waco's Extraco Events Center in Texas. But instead of watching from the sideline, Murray, a sophomore, got her chance to shine as a participant at the event.

"I definitely felt more prepared this year after watching last year," Murray said.
Murray didn't disappoint. As a matter of fact, she came through with the decisive win in the reining competition that put the No. 1-ranked Aggies over the top in a 5-3 victory against Kansas State.

It was Texas A&M's third straight national championship and ninth in the history of the program since the national event began in 1999.

Murray said being able to compete, and to win her event, was thrilling.
"It feels pretty amazing," she said. "I really, truly can't believe that we were able to win it. For the school to win its ninth title is incredible."

Update on Grand View Cemetery

The remodeling is still going on and the cemetery will be opened on Sunday before Memorial Day and Monday Memorial Day from 12 - 4pm.

They had plan on digging out the grass and reseeding but the winter rains made it impossiable to do so they dugged the trenches as they went.

The trees were all trimed and some were removed and the ones that had been cut down before and a stump left, they grounded those down.

Burbank High School Choirs Wins Honors Burbank High School choirs received the highest honors in competition in Fairfield, Ohio in March. In each of their categories, both In Sync and Impressions were named as Grand Champions, the highest award. They brought home trophies and individual medallions for each performer.

In Sync, also topped the 10 other show choirs by receiving "Best Choreography," "Best Vocal Performance," "Best Costumes," and "Best Desighned Set." Impressions also received "Best Vocals' and "Best Choreography."

Choir Director is Brett Carroll and Assisant Choir Director is Donna Dandino. The financial support of community businesses and individuals at the November "Night of Magic" dinner fundraiser provided the funds for the choirs to make the trip. There are more competitions this year, culminating with the "Pop Show" on May 19,20, and 21, which is open to the public.

Clark Jellison won first prize on his first Rose Parade design when he was 16 years old.

Clark Jellison has entered the annual Rose Parade float design contest since he was a Burbank High School student. Now 56, Jellison is the official float design contest winner for a seventh time for the "Just Imagine" theme entry into the 2012 Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

When he was just 16 years old, his design, "Neptune’s Daughter," took first place in the 1973 parade.This year’s sketch, with a working title of "The Great America Dream Machine," was a design Jellison originally submitted 10 years ago that came in second for the local contest. READ FULL STORY

Academic Decathlon team advances to state competition

The Burbank High School Academic Decathlon team has advanced to the state championship after finishing fifth at the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon earlier this month.

Led by long-time Burbank High English teacher Val Beidelman, students Benjamin Reyes, Hector Santa Cruz, Mariam Kyarunts, Rafael Santa Cruz, Audrey Min, Amanda Porreca, Marc Hoffman and Bruno Maynez faced off against competitors from 47 other Southern California high schools during two days of competition on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

Burbank High finished with a team score of 40,600 out of 60,000, good enough for fifth place. West High School in Torrance won the competition for the third consecutive year with a score of 44,476 points. The top eight teams advance to the state competition, which kicks off on March 12 in Sacramento.

Reyes, a senior and Burbank High Academic Decathlon president, earned an award for individually scoring more than 8,000 points. The team also won several sectional awards, including first place in the oral super quiz and third place in the super quiz

Burbank High School Principal Bruce Osgood will step down at the end of the academic year to assume a similar role at Village Christian Schools in Sun Valley, officials said Thursday. Osgood, 56, will serve as principal for the middle and high schools at Village Christian, a K-12 private school with an enrollment of about 1,000 students, said Head of Schools Tom Konjoyan. He replaces Lisa Levoe, who served as interim principal for one year. Levoe will now assume the title of assistant principal and continue to be in charge of college counseling.

Village Christian has been a standard bearer in private education for 60 years, Osgood said, and offers a unique experience for an affordable price. "I have been in public education for 25 years and have always loved it," Osgood said. "That hasn’t diminished at all, but I just feel at this time the call was to move to a Christian school where I could pursue my two great passions, ministry and education."

Since Osgood took the helm at Burbank High in 2003, the school raised its Academic Performance Index score by more than 100 points, and he supervised a major refurbishment project. He has been a champion for the school’s athletic teams, and two years ago oversaw the Burbank High centennial celebration.

In 2010, he was honored by the Assn. of California School Administrators as the 2009-10 High School Principal of the Year. READ FULL STORY

BRUNNER, Dr. Robert T. Sept. 19, 1914-Dec. 11, 2010

Dr. Robert (Bob) Brunner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away in his sleep last Saturday morning. He and his wife, Mary have been Burbank residents since 1942.

Robert was born in St. Louis, MO, but moved to Los Angeles at the age of one. He graduated from L.A. High School, and U.C.L.A. where he was a member of Delta Chi. He achieved his Ed.D from U.S.C. He was a school administrator in Burbank for 33 years and retired as the principal of Luther Burbank Junior High School. He was active in statewide and southern section activities of the National Elementary Principals Association and the Secondary High School Administrators Association, serving as Chairman for a term.

Robert and Mary, "Always tried to be involved in organizations of a charitable or community betterment nature." He was very active in Burbank. He served the Y.M.C.A. beginning in 1948 for many years, including three years as president. He joined the Burbank Rotary in 1949, had 32 years of perfect attendance, served as President, and remained involved, especially, in the Burbank Rotary Foundation. After retirement he was involved with and served on the board of the Friends of the Library.

Robert (Bob to many) is survived by his wife, Mary, of 71 years, a son (Larry and wife Linda), three grandsons and five great-grandchildren; and a daughter (Kathy and husband Doug Adair) four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services for Robert will be Thursday, December 16th at 3:00pm at Church of the Hills in Forest Lawns Hollywood Hills. The family welcomes friends to come by the home of Robert and Mary following the service, at 5:00pm.

WHITTIER — The Burbank High football team had its share of opportunities in its opening CIF Southern Section playoff game Friday.

Playing against a tough Santa Fe squad, the Bulldogs fell behind early. However, the locals played themselves back into the game in the second half, and were driving to cut a disadvantage that had been 21 points to just a touchdown.

But Burbank was unable to score on the drive late in the fourth quarter, and the Chiefs held on for a 28-14 Southeast Division first-round win at Pioneer High.

"It's disappointing, because we definitely had our share of opportunities," said Burbank Coach Hector Valencia, whose team ends the season 7-4. "Our kids battled and they never game up. We just didn't execute like we were supposed to, and that hurt us."

Burbank, the No. 3 team from the Pacific League, had its hands full against Santa Fe (7-4), which placed second in the Del Rio League. Bulldogs' senior quarterback Adam Colman had to operate under constant pressure, and the Chiefs stuffed the box repeatedly, naturalizing the Burbank running game. READ FULL STORY

Burbank Frosh beats Burroughs 24-20

Yesterday in a thrilling game the Burbank High Bulldogs beat John Burrourghs Indians 24 to 20 in a nail biting game at Burbank High School. The bulldogs led at one point 16 to 6, but the Indians fought back to take a 20 to 16 lead. The Bulldogs scored their last touchdown with about 5 miniutes left in the game. The Indians moved down the field in the last drive of the game with 14 seconds left on the clock and 3 and goal, but was unable to get the ball in the endzone, and then it was 4th and goal on the one yard line with 6 seconds on the clack and the Bulldogs defense held and stopped the Indians from scoring and Burbank held on to win as the clock ran out.

Tonight is the Big Game between the Bulldogs and Indians at Memorial Field with the Junior Varsity playing first and the Varsity playing later. The Bulldogs, Indians and Arcadia are all tied for first place.

This year, our own Cathy Ferguson '65 (Olympic Gold Medalist) is flying down from Northern California to speak...The BHS Athletic Coordinator, Fred Cook, will try to coax Freddy Sanchez (recent San Francisco Giants World Series Winning-second baseman and '96 BHS Alum) to attend the ceremonies... Every other year, BHS Alums who distinguished themselves during their high school athletic careers, are nominated and a certain number are inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame...This year's program promises to be very exciting...

Among those being inducted are John Lockwood, The BHS 1965 CIF Cross Country Champion Team,

PASADENA — If ever the Burbank High football team needed a bounce-back game, it was Friday.

The Bulldogs were knocked from the ranks of the Pacific League's unbeaten — and knocked around on the field — last week against Arcadia, as the locals suffered a 28-point loss at home.
Burbank was hoping to get back on track, and looking to stay in the race for a league championship, with a game at host Pasadena.

The Bulldogs did just that.

Behind an offensive push in the second half and a defense that came up with some big stops, Burbank got back to winning with a 45-26 triumph.

"With what happened last week, it was crucial for us to come back and have a big game tonight," said Burbank Coach Hector Valencia, whose team shared the league title last season. "Our offense played very well and our defense was able to step up."

Burbank (6-2, 4-1 in league) held just a 24-20 lead at the half, thanks largely to the efforts of running back Ulisies Ochoa. The senior had 154 yards in the first half and ended the game with 211 yards in 27 carries for two touchdowns. READ FULL STORY

MEMORIAL FIELD — Whether lack of execution or a lack of focus from the outset, things simply did not click as usual for the Burbank High football team Friday night.

A plethora of problems arrived at virtually all angles against visiting Arcadia. The Bulldogs' special teams broke down, they fumbled twice deep in their own territory and the offense limped on the injured leg of workhorse running back Ulisies Ochoa. The fiery Apaches took advantage of the lapses, rolling to a 48-20 drubbing.

"So many things could have been different," Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said. "Obviously today we did not take care of business at all."

Arcadia (4-3, 3-1 in league) struck first when a host of Apaches rushed Burbank punter David Smith, blocking the attempt and sending the football rolling out of the back of the end zone for a safety. At the end of the first quarter, Burbank (5-2, 3-1) trailed, 2-0.

From there, Arcadia tacked on 21 unanswered points. Quarterback Myles Carr hooked up with AJ Rail on a 25-yard touchdown pass, Brian Ponce rushed for a one-yard score and Carr hit Sam Crabtree on a nine-yard touchdown toss. READ FULL STORY

And, when Hoover lost an even bigger catalyst of its own offense before halftime of a league game at Burroughs High's Memorial Field, so also went any chance of the Tornadoes getting back in the game.

Bulldogs quarterback Adam Colman passed for 203 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns in the absence of standout running back Ulisies Ochoa, who was injured in practice earlier in the week, as Burbank posted a 56-0 victory over a reeling Hoover squad that could ne

GLENDALE — The Burbank High football team started off Thursday night's Pacific game against Glendale with a rhythmic 60-yard touchdown drive, but it's what the Bulldogs did next that really set the tone for what would snowball into a 56-8 blowout at Moyse Field.

An onside kick — with less than three minutes elapsed in the first quarter — had the same effect on the Nitros that it did on just about everyone else in the stadium, utter surprise. It was recovered by the Bulldogs at the Nitros 49-yard line and four plays and 1:10 later Burbank led by two touchdowns.

"We were not gonna back up, we were just gonna go after them," Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said. "From what I've seen in every game, [Glendale's] been playing every team great in the first half, so I'm thinking this team is legit and it's really good, so my thing was to just to be aggressive."

Glendale (0-5, 0-2 in league) was back on its heels from that point on and never regained its balance, as Burbank (4-1, 2-0), the No. 2 team in the CIF Southeast Division, had put the game away by the early stages of the second quarter and led, 56-0, at halftime. READ FULL STORY

PASADENA — When the Burbank High football team played against Muir last season, the teams took part in a thriller that the Bulldogs were finally able to win in two overtimes.
That win helped pave the way for the Bulldogs to share the league championship in 2009.
When the Pacific League foes met Friday in the Pacific League opener for both teams, the Bulldogs were bracing for another dog fight.

And that's just what they got in a contest at Muir.

After the Mustangs took the lead late in the third quarter, the Bulldogs embarked on a drive with the game on the line. Luckily for the locals, the drive culminated with quarterback Adam Colman stretching across the goal line with 11.8 seconds left to lift Burbank to a 22-19 victory.

SAN GABRIEL — Totally dominating.
That's how the Burbank High football team looked in the first half against San Gabriel.
Totally overwhelmed.

That's the way the Bulldogs looked in the second half against the Matadors.
Burbank was able to jump out to an early 37-point lead Friday in its nonleague game on the road. It appeared as if the Bulldogs would be on the giving end of a monumental blowout, and San Gabriel looked powerless to stop the onslaught.

But Burbank began to self-destruct. However, despite a valiant comeback attempt by the Matadors in the second half, the Bulldogs were able to hold on to a 44-36 victory.
Burbank Coach Hector Valencia said he didn't think it was complacency that led to his team's struggles late against San Gabriel (0-3).

"No, I think it was just all the little mistakes that we were making," said Valencia, whose team committed four turnovers — all in the second half. "Those are the things that really killed us. But we were the ones that shot ourselves in the foot."

The Bulldogs (2-1), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division, did receive a fine effort from senior running back Ulises Ochoa. Ochoa ran for 184 yards in 22 carries and had touchdowns of five, 22 and 12 yards. READ FULL STORY

WEST HILLS — It took less than 30 seconds for Burbank High quarterback Adam Colman to find Jose Rodriguez in stride for an 80-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, that was the lone bright spot on offense Friday night in a nonleague game against host Chaminade, which dominated both sides of the ball en route to a 37-6 victory.

The Eagles (1-0) — ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Western Division — brushed off the touchdown by the Bulldogs — No. 1 in the Southeast Division — with one of their own less than two minutes later, and had already put up 30 on the scoreboard before Colman and Rodriguez prevented the shutout.

"This was a big game for us, because that's a quality program over there," Chaminade Coach Ed Croson said. "The kids were really excited to play tonight."

The Eagles sure did look excited against the Bulldogs (1-1), but also proved they were ready, as they drove the ball downfield and got rushing touchdowns from Tru Jarvis on their first two drives of the game.

Jarvis was unkind to the Bulldogs' defense, running for 121 yards in 13 carries and three touchdowns —the last coming in the fourth quarter when the game was long out of reach.

RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 1-0; the Eagles are 0-0.

LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Warren, 41-39; Chaminade didn't play.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs had their problems on defense last week, but were able to pull out the victory. The team received a good effort from senior quarterback Adam Colman, who threw the game-winning touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. Senior running back Ulises Ochoa also did well, scoring three touchdowns. Burbank will be looking to avenge a 17-14 nonleague loss to Chaminade last season, The Eagles began the 2009 campaign with five straight wins, ending the season with a 7-5 record. The team is young and boasts a fine crop of sophomores, some who have transferred in.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Bulldogs will play their first five games of the season on the road. The team's first home game at Memorial Field will be Oct. 14 — a Pacific League contest against Hoover.

DOWNEY — Burbank coaches will have to wait at least another week if they want to see what their defense is capable of.

Reason being there was not much defense played Friday night when the Bulldogs hit the road in a Zero Week nonleague opener against Warren.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the Bears' defense didn't play that well, as Burbank managed to get out of Justice Stadium with a 41-39 nonleague victory.

"We expected a close game," said Burbank Coach Hector Valencia, whose team is ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Southwest preseason poll. "We knew they have a good team over there, especially with a good quarterback and running back."

Bears quarterback Sam Bettencourt and running back Jamill Magee ran up, down and sideways against the Bulldogs defense.

Magee did the most damage, totaling 180 yards in 18 carries, including four touchdown runs, the last one giving the Bears a 39-35 lead with 2:22 remaining in the contest.

As it played out throughout the game, however, Magee and the Bears' offense was let down by the team's defense, which committed two penalties on Burbank's ensuing drive that allowed them to take over on the Bears' 47 without completing a pass or running for positive yardage.
From there, Adam Colman completed four of seven passes, including the game-winning touchdown to Jose Rodriguez.

Colman and Rodriguez also hooked up in the third quarter on an eight-yard touchdown that gave the Bulldogs a 23-20 advantage. READ REST OF STORY HERE

Genevieve Sultenfuss BHS 28, 100th Birthday

On Sunday, August 15, 2010 I, along with Jana Jordan Guest - also BHS '70 and a longtime friend of the honoree, attended the 100th birthday party of Genevieve Cowden Sultenfuss, BHS '28, at the Glendale Elk's Lodge on Colorado in Glendale. Over 250 (closer to 300) people were there to congratulate Genevieve. She and some of her family sat at a head table and the guests filed past to give Genevieve their birthday greetings and best wishes. At 2:00 a serve yourself ice cream sundae bar began, with numerous kinds of Baskin-Robbins ice cream, and toppings galore, (sundaes on Sunday)! At 3:00 two large cakes with 50 lit candles on each were brought out, and everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Genevieve. (The candles were then blown out with an air cannister!) One cake was chocolate and the other was white cake, and after being cut were served to all the guests. At 4:00 was a champagne toast to Genevieve, with several of her family speaking, along with a Glendale City Councilwoman and two former Mayors. Also, a resolution was read from L.A. County Supervisor, Mike Antonovich, who also knows Genevieve. Besides champagne, wine and Martinelli's cider was available. It was a grand celebration! Genevieve's younger brother, 97 year old Willis Cowden, came from Salt Lake City with his daughter for the celebration. Willis is a BHS winter '32 grad. He and his family have lived in Salt Lake City for many years, and Willis was a police officer for the SLC Police Department for 29 years. Genevieve and Willis had two older sisters who have passed away that were from the BHS '25 and '26 classes. The mother of Genevieve and her siblings lived to be almost 103!

Genevieve Cowden Sultenfuss was born on August 12, 1910. She still lives in her own home in Glendale that she and her husband had built in 1940. She still sold real estate occasionally after she was 90, and she drove until she was 93. She was the first female president of the Glendale Board of Realtors in 1968, and the first female president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce in 1977. Her daughters both graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale, Audrey Sultenfuss Carr in 1956, and Julie Sultenfuss Shermer in 1960. Genevieve has seven grandchildren, and about the same number of great-grandchildren. Genevieve from the BHS class of 1928 rode in a 1928 Ford in the BHS Centennial Parade on September 13, 2008. There is a story about her that I wrote that is included in the BHS Centennial book, "The Blue and White Wave High". Genevieve and some of her family will be at the next Senior Bulldogs alumni luncheon on September 13 at the Burbank Elk's Lodge where there will be recognition of Genevieve's 100th birthday in a Bulldogs celebration.

Burbank High senior Greg Dotson is the 2010 All-Area Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Being a celebrated middle-distance runner, one might think Greg Dotson would cringe at the mention of running long-distance races.

Moreover, it would be expected that the Burbank High standout would shudder at the suggestion of taking to the track as a sprinter.
However, Dotson, who just finished his senior season, is a rare breed. Not only does the champion 800-meter runner actually enjoy distance running, he also jumps at the chance to compete in the sprints.

"I really got more into the [1,600] this year," Dotson said. "I like the 800 more than anything, but I really tried to get into the [1,600] more. Being in cross-country, I also know that I have to run the distances to improve in my other races.

"It's also pretty cool to run in the sprints, and I really enjoyed doing that."

Dotson's versatility as an athlete was put on display at the Pacific League cross-town rivalry meet with Burroughs. Along with cruising to wins in the 800 (1 minute, 57.07 seconds) and the 1,600 (4:25.76), he also showed he has some speed by winning the 200 (23.32).

Burbank Coach Trevor Marca said Dotson's willingness to run various races makes him an exceptional athlete.

"Unlike most 800 guys, he actually likes to run the longer distances," Marca said. "He looks forward to running over longer distances to improve his strength and his endurance. Also, the mile is an event he has become very good at, and the [4x400 relay] is an event he really loves.
"We had him run his share of 200 races this year to improve on his speed."

Dotson showed his prowess in the 1,600, running a 4:11 to put him fourth on a prestigious Burbank all-time list.

Although he has proven he can run a variety of events, Dotson's bread and butter is the 800. During his senior campaign, he emerged as one of the top competitors in the event in California, as well as the nation.

Dotson won the league 800 championship and went on to capture a CIF Southern Section title. That success led him all the way to the CIF-State Track and Field Championships, where he put on a gutsy performance to take the runner-up spot. In addition, he broke a longstanding Burbank school record in the 800.

With all that he was able to accomplish, Dotson was voted the 2010 Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the editors and sportswriters of the Burbank Leader, Glendale News-Press and La Cañada Valley Sun.

In a season of fine achievements, Dotson's crowning moment came at the CIF-State Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High in Clovis.

In an epic battle with Sean Krinik of Placentia Valencia — who had the top time in the nation — Dotson held his own. In a torrid race that might have been one of the best 800 competitions in state history, Krinik's amazing winning mark of 1:48.20 was the best in the nation this year. Dotson wasn't far behind, setting the third-best time this year with a 1:49.40.

BURBANK — Although he just completed his senior baseball season, Burbank High baseball standout Lonnie Kauppila has already fulfilled two of his dreams. Last year, Kauppila fulfilled a childhood dream of earning a college scholarship when he signed with Stanford. Wednesday, another one of his long-standing desires came true when he was chosen in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft. Kauppila was drafted in the 44th round — 1,325 overall — by the Oakland Athletics.

"It's kind of a dream come true for me," Kauppila said. "It's definitely something that I can tell the grandkids about when I get older. It's just a good feeling being taken anywhere in the draft."It was also nice knowing that wherever I went in the draft, I always had Stanford to fall back on."

Kauppila, a shortstop, is the first player to be drafted from Burbank High in 10 years. The last was Corry Parrott, who was taken in the 48th round of the 2000 draft by the Chicago White Sox. The last local chosen was former resident Tom Vassella, who attended Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. He was taken in the 11th round — 339th overall — in 2006 by the Houston Astros.

With a full college ride, Kauppila indicated he will likely opt to attend Stanford in the fall rather than sign with Oakland. "I wasn't really surprised, but I was just relieved that I actually got drafted, anyway," Kauppila said. "I was kind of anxious to know [when I would be drafted]. I was just waiting and trying to see what's gonna happen. I was just waiting for my name and it finally came."Kauppila, the reigning All-Area Player of the Year, batted .443 with three home runs, 35 hits, 22 runs batted in, 35 runs scored and 21 stolen bases as a senior for the Bulldogs, helping them to the postseason. Memorial Field project pushed back to winter, causing problems for area football teams.

BURBANK — Burroughs High football Coach Keith Knoop realized his team would have to make do without a home field for the 2010 season. The coach was told the renovation project to construct a new stadium, running track and football field on the school's Memorial Field site would begin the first week of June.With his team being displaced for a project that would last past the 2010 campaign, Knoop and the Burroughs administrators had to schedule all the Indians' 10 home games on the road.

Burbank Coach Hector Valencia and the Bulldogs were in the same boat, as the team also uses Memorial Field as their home venue. Having resigned themselves — and their teams — to their fate for the upcoming season, the coaches were floored when they were told last month that the construction project would be delayed.

According to the Burbank Unified School District, construction of the project isn't expected to begin until late November or early December. "With the delay, that means that we are going to have to play most of our games on the road for two seasons now instead of just one," Knoop said. "If we had our way, we would have liked the construction to begin [this month], so it could get finished earlier."Knoop said he was able to get three Pacific League games — against Glendale, Arcadia and Burbank — moved back to Memorial Field. However, the other seven contests will be on the road."With next year included, that means that essentially we'll have 17 games on the road," Knoop said. "And that doesn't even include playoff games."

Valencia was equally frustrated with the delay. His team had to deal with displacement a year ago when construction was underway on Burbank's new field and running track.Along with the rivalry game with the Indians, Valencia said the Bulldogs have convinced two league opponents to play at Memorial Field next season."It's disappointing, because we expected the construction to start right after the school year was over," Valencia said. "Now they're telling us that there's going to be another delay? That's just not right."Valencia said the delay is going to cost the program, and the district, more money."Because we scheduled all those games on the road next year, that's going to cost us more money," he said. "It's expensive to bus kids to games. It costs $270 an hour for a bus, and we have to pay that now for road games that we could have played at home."

Believing that their field would be inoperative for the upcoming season, Burbank and Burroughs signed contracts with nonleague schools to play three games on the road. The Indians will play games away against former Foothill League rivals Saugus, Canyon and Hart. Knoop said he tried to get the schools to switch and play at Memorial Field, but to no avail."You think that being old league teams they would do that for us," he said. "But they said they already signed contracts and they have things planned for those home games."

If the construction does get underway later this year, that would force Burroughs and Burbank to be displaced for two seasons — at the least.The Indians have the added headache of finding a place to practice during the construction. But for many — like Valencia — who have been waiting for a new venue to finally be constructed, they are bracing for another delay. They aren't convinced in the least that work will be started in November or December."Who knows," Valencia said. Edie Thoreson of Palm Desert, a corporate wife who moved everywhere with her husband, was first a student at Burbank High School.

She remembers a girl there called Mary Frances Reynolds with a whole chest full of Girl Scout badges. Edie was in the audience when Mary Frances won a talent contest with a lip-sync performance, which led to her signing with Warner Bros. and becoming Debbie Reynolds.

Edie felt like hot stuff by going to her junior prom at Burbank High in Jane Wyman's navy blue Cadillac convertible. Her date's father was foreman of Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman's San Fernando Valley ranch, and they let him borrow Jane's car.

DOWNTOWN — A 20-year-old man charged in connection with the 2008 death of his father will not face jail time after pleading this week to lesser charges. Noah Loock, of Burbank, pleaded no contest Tuesday in Pasadena Superior Court to one count of misdemeanor battery stemming from a fight with his father,

Timothy Loock, an assistant football coach at Burbank High School. Noah Loock was sentenced to eight days in jail, but will not spend additional time behind bars based on credit for time served, prosecutors said. The deal specifies that he spend three years on probation, complete 120 hours of community service and attend anger management classes.

His attorney, Lewis Romero, said the father and son were in a struggle that got out of hand. Neither wanted to hurt the other and no one used deadly force, Romero said. "Noah had a legal right to self-defense after being assaulted by his father, whom he loved," Romero said. "How much should a child who is now a man take? This just happened to be the day where Noah said, "I am not going to take this anymore."

Immediate family and several of Timothy Loock's friends and co-workers wrote letters on Noah's behalf. And while Deputy Dist. Atty. Rusty Moore called the outcome a "fair resolution," one family member said it amounted to little more than a slap on the wrist.

Noah Loock had faced one felony count of involuntary manslaughter. "Am I happy with it? Yes and no," said Kathy Loock, Timothy's sister. "I would have liked to see a harsher penalty. I have seen people get jail terms for less serious crimes. However, at least now Noah will be forced to face some consequences for the events of Nov. 29, [2008]."

The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. when police responded to a reported fight between father and son at their home in the 1800 block of North Avon Street. Timothy Loock, 48, was rendered unconscious after the altercation and taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Investigators said the pair had gotten into a argument after Noah Loock, then 18, took a family car against his father's wishes. Timothy Loock ended the argument when he literally kicked his son out the front door of the house, according to testimony at a preliminary hearing. Noah Loock went around the back of the home to retrieve his keys and wallet when he was confronted by his father.The two got into a pushing match, and Noah Loock responded to his father's punches by throwing the final blow, according to the testimony.

He was taken into custody, booked on suspicion of murder and spent three days in jail. He would later spend another day in jail following his second arrest. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office filed charges after the Los Angeles County coroner ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head and neck. An expert analysis prepared for the defense concluded that the findings were "incomplete and fatally flawed.

" Kathy Loock sought to clarify that as an attorney, she believes in the judicial system, and I "trusted the district attorney's office and Russell Moore did what they thought was right."

Timothy Loock, an all-league wide receiver for the class of 1978 at Burbank High School, went on to coach receivers and defensive backs. He worked in the entertainment industry as a post-production editor for nearly 30 years, most recently at Technicolor Creative Services in Hollywood.

Noah Loock, a 2008 graduate of Burroughs High School, recently completed his first year on a scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute. Described as a talented artist, the family gathered around Noah Loock, unwilling to lose another one of its members over what many perceived to be a tragic accident. The legal process has been excruciating for all involved, family members said. Timothy's brothers, Joel and Paul Loock, described a deeply religious family.

"Noah is my godson, and he's my brother Paul's godson, and we always protect our own," Joel Loock said. "We were brought up in a very close environment, and we always stand by each other, especially during tragic events. "We're not happy with the decision. What we're happy about is at least this can come to an end."

Burbank High School: 'This is it' for 670 students

Ani Vertanous and Sabina Agazarian said they've been friends since middle school, but walking up the hill to the Starlight Bowl for their Burbank High School commencement Friday, they started yelling.They weren't going to be sitting next to one another for the ceremony, but they said that didn't take away from their sense of accomplishment, relief and joy."It feels amazing," Vertanous said. "It's the end, and I accomplished everything."The two will be going to Pasadena City College next year, representing two stories among the almost 670 graduating seniors who became alumni Friday night.

"Senior year was the best year," said Tyler Wells, who'll be enrolling at Glendale Community College. His family flew in from the Bay Area. For his mother, Fran Wells, reflecting on her son's accomplishments and growth in the last four years almost made her cry, she said."I'm so proud and excited for him," she said. "And he's going to be around, and we're happy to have him."

While Tyler Wells will be in the neighborhood next year, the commencement theme "This Is It" rang true for many others who'll be moving far from home, like Aaron Frank."In ninth grade we had a speaker who said, 'No regrets,'" said the incoming Syracuse University freshman. "I pushed myself and made sure I never regretted any decisions I make.

"Same with Sophie Irwin, who'll be going to college in Alabama. Her father, Steve, said he's gotten accustomed to not seeing Sophie much."This year, we barely saw her," he said. "She'll be back on major holidays. We have a small house, the extra elbow room might be nice."

Baseball teammates Sam Levitt and Lonnie Kauppila said that with several graduating seniors, the lineup is likely to enter a rebuilding phase. Kauppila will be playing baseball at Stanford University next year, while Levitt enrolls at UCLA."I'll see him when he's in town [playing UCLA]," Levitt said. "It hasn't hit me yet. I'm looking forward to the future, but I'm trying to remember everything that happened during high school."

Clad in blue caps and gowns, students milled around the grass behind the bowl's seats, taking pictures and celebrating their final moments in Burbank Unified. "They are so close with one another and friendly, and just really nice kids," said Carolyn Grogan, an English teacher.

For Daniel Flores, one of the student speakers, it was a moment he wasn't sure he'd see. Freshman year was his low point, he said. The next year, he transferred to Monterrey High School, made up 127 credits and returned to Burbank High, giving up horseplay for career goals."The message is, no matter who you are or what you want to do, you can do it," he said.

"This is a very special moment for me right now."That's what "This Is It" was all about, said Mary Beth Medina, the school's student board member and a graduation speaker."This expression depends on every senior here," she said in her address. "It's not what you say, it's about what you do . . . We made it through. Now, welcome to your future."

MCCAMBRIDGE PARK — It was apparent early on in the playoff game between Burbank High and Pioneer Valley that it wasn’t going to be a pitchers’ duel.

It was also evident that the winner was going to have to outlast their opponent in a slugfest.

Although the Bulldogs battled their way back several times in Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division III wild-card game, they fell just short, losing 10-9, in a game at McCambridge Park.

The loss ends the season for the Bulldogs (17-10), which tied for second place in the Pacific League and went into the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from the league.

Burbank pitchers Kristi Hale, who started, and Chrystal Diaz had trouble stifling the Panthers’ batters.

“Our pitching was inconsistent, and that was something that really hurt us,” Burbank Coach Nicole Drabecki said. “When your pitchers are having problems, that puts a lot of pressure on your defense.”

The Bulldogs pitchers gave up 12 hits and nine walks.

On offense, Burbank received some solid performances. Senior shortstop Kassy Uchida, who is headed to Utah State, was three for four with three runs scored, senior Megan Schafer was three for four with a triple, a double and five runs batted in and senior Alyssa Meredith celebrated her 18th birthday by going three for three with two RBI and two runs scored.
